Panama Case: FIA names high-level panel to investigate record tampering case against SECP

ISLAMABAD:  The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Wednesday has constituted a four-member team to investigate the allegations of tampering of record against the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) and other departments concerned by the six-member joint investigation team (JIT) probing the ruling family’s offshore assets.

Taking notice of the allegations, the three-judge special bench of the Supreme Court – constituted to oversee implementation the Panamagate case verdict directed the FIA director-general to probe the allegations.

Following directives of Supreme Court, FIA’s acting director-general Ahmed Latif forwarded four names to the interior ministry for approval.

Sources have been reported to have said that the committee would comprise of  Deputy Director Hazrat Ali, Ayaz Khan and Tahir Tanvir headed by Director Anti-Corruption Wing Maqsoodul Hasan. The team would jointly investigate the allegations of tampering with the SECP record.

A notification to this effect is likely to be issued by the FIA on Thursday (today) after approval from the interior ministry.

The JIT, in its report, alleged that some state institutions were tampering with the record and creating unnecessary hurdles in its work, besides threatening some members of the team. The report also alleged that the SECP chairman and executive director were tampering with the record and showing non-cooperative attitude.

The JIT is due to submit its third fortnightly progress report today.The Supreme Court had given the JIT two months to complete its probe into the Sharif family’s offshore assets. After the submission of the third fortnightly report, the probe team will have another 15 more days to complete its task.
