Court rejects Ayyan Ali plea for cancellation of arrest warrants

The court has rejected a plea for cancellation of the arrest warrants of model Ayyan Ali in currency smuggling case and adjourned the hearing of the case till July 29.

Ayyan Ali had failed to show up in court despite warrants issued in her name by the special court of customs, excise and taxation in the last hearing. The hearing of the case could not proceed further being Sheeraz Kiyani, judge of Customs court on a leave.

Latif Khosa, the council, said that Ayyan Ali will appear before the court on next hearing, adding that a petition has been filed in Lahore High Court seeking to quash of the case against Ayyan Ali. If the decision comes in favour of Ayyan Ali then she will need not to appear in the court.

The model was stopped at Islamabad’s Benazir Bhutto International Airport on March 14, 2015 before reportedly boarding a flight to Dubai. She was arrested on charges of money laundering after customs officials recovered $506,000 from her luggage.

In November 2015, Ayyan pleaded guilty when she was indicted for attempting to smuggle more than half a million dollars in cash out of the country.

Ayyan’s name was also out on the Exit Control List (ECL) which was finally lifted in February this year by the interior ministry in February this year, after which she was able to fly out of the country.
