Pakistan made it to the final of the ICC Champion’s trophy with what can only be described as a victory that stunned the world. The historic win marks the greatest progress the any Pakistan squad has made in the history of the tournament. And while Pakistan can never really be counted out of any game given the pride with which they wear their label of unpredictability, what stunned the cricketing world was how comprehensively they defeated tournament favourites England.

Naturally the win gave otherwise desolate Pakistani fans not only a reason to be proud of their team, but also great trolling material for those that had doubted Pakistan’s ability before the tournament started, as memes flooded social media wrecking havoc all over the internet:

A lot of people were critical of those who had written Pakistan off from having any hopes to lift the tournament.

And the trolling just never seemed to stop . . .

While others just got REALLY savage

And while the trolling continued well into the night (and the morning), the general sense of jubilation amongst Pakistani cricket fans and indeed the entire nation could not be ignored.

And as the crowd at the stadium roared in approval as the winning side took a lap of honour at Cardiff, the digital world was full of fans gushing and glowing at the monumental victory.

Even former Pakistani players, coaches and officials could not rein in their emotions on twitter as a slew of congratulatory messages flooded in from the icons:

Misbah couldn’t stay his regular composed self as he let it be known how proud he is of the team he left to Sarfraz and how far they have come from the post-Misbah slump.

Shahid Afridi’s love/hate relationship with the Pakistani public and the PCB doesn’t mean he still isn’t the biggest fan of the Pakistan cricket team

Waqar Younis was his ususal fiery self as he rubbished any excuses the England captain tried to give for his team’s loss

Chief selector Inzamam ul Haq couldn’t help but feel a little proud as well

An interesting aspect that arose from the ashes of England’s brutal defeat was a staunch defence of Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed, who had recently been ridiculed on more than one occasion for his skill at English conversation:

And while it was good to see people come to Sarfraz’s defence over such needless and mean spirited criticism, the internet was literally straining to stay afloat with the sheer amount of uploads, shares, tweets, re-tweets and all manners of digital expression from not only Pakistan but all over the globe. Current and former international cricket stars also took to twitter to express their delight at the performance put up by Pakistan in the semi-final as they won their third game on the trot:

Dale Steyn wanted the world to know that rankings are arbitrary to ability

Shane Warne felt that the timing was right for Pakistan to be in form as they catch steam going into the final

Ian Bishop gave the green army full marks for their performance against England

Legendary batsmen Kumar Sangakara reiterated Waqar Younis’s words and dismissed the idea of England being unfairly disadvantaged

And Alan Wilkins summed the game up for what it was: a complete blitz!

Congratulations to team Pakistan for making it to the final of the ICC Champions Trophy against all odds and best of luck for the final game against either arch rivals India or Bangladesh!
