Govt bans Zakat, Fitrana collection by banned outfits

KARACHI: The authorities at the federal and provincial levels have been directed to ensure that the banned outfits were not allowed to collect Zakat and Fitrana on Eidul Fitr day as well as during the holy month of Ramzan.

According to details, banned outfit and certain political parties garner the mammoth amount of fiscal collection in Ramzan in terms of Zakat and Fitrana. Against this backdrop, the law enforcement agencies (LEAs) ensured stern arrangements this year to curb the illicit practice.

Reports said that no activity pertaining to the collection of Zakat and Fitrana by the banned outfits in Karachi has been reported thus far. Karachi is the top city in Pakistan where the maximum collection is done for Zakat and Fitrana.

Sources privy to police said that police have been deployed in vicinities of mosques and madrassas.

An officer of Sindh Special Branch Police, on condition of anonymity, said that no division has thus far submitted report pertaining to the collection of Zakat and Fitrana by banned outfits.

Another police official, when contacted, told that several sittings are being arranged to oversee security matters in Ramzan.

Similar arrangements have been made in other cities of the country including Lahore, Islamabad, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Quetta and Peshawar to ensure that no banned organisation is able to collect the funds.
