Lawmaker survives gun attack

KARACHI: A Sindh Assembly’s member belonging to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) survived a gun attack in Karachi’s Central District on Saturday evening.

An unidentified motorcyclist opened fire on MPA Jamal Ahmed near his house in Shadman Town, within the jurisdictions of the Sharah-e-Noor Jahan police station. The lawmaker, fortunately, remained unhurt.

Police officials and Rangers reached the site to collect evidence. The attacker had fled, leaving his motorbike behind.

“We are verifying whether the attacker was specifically targeting the MPA or not,” DSP Mushtaq Tanoli said. “Nothing can be said until our investigation is complete.”

He added that police had found an empty shell of a 30-bore pistol at the crime scene and sent it to the forensic division. The suspect’s motorcycle registration number will be also be traced to determine its ownership.

Jamal Ahmed was elected in the PS-110 Karachi constituency in the 2013 general elections. The MQM-P condemned the attack and demanded that the law-enforcement agencies should immediately track down and arrest the culprit.
