Wasim Akhtar, city council members protest outside Sindh Assembly

KARACHI: Local bodies’ members, including Mayor Wasim Akhtar, demonstrated against inadequate power and resources outside the Sindh Assembly on Friday (today).

The protesters tried to enter the Sindh Assembly, however, the gates were closed and a heavy contingent of police deployed at the site.

Speaking to the protesters, Wasim Akhtar targeted his remarks towards ruling party, Pakistan Peoples Party. He said, “you [PPP] have become the king of bad governance. You have destroyed Sindh and now you have come to destroy Karachi. But we, the elected representatives, will not let you destroy Karachi.”

A woman also reportedly fainted during the protest.

The protesters claimed that the government in the budget had failed to approve the schemes hatched by the local bodies’ representatives. Earlier at a press conference on Wednesday, Wasim Akhtar criticised the Sindh government for not allocating any funds for development schemes proposed by the by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation in the annual development programme 2017-2018.

He stressed that Karachi has been neglected frequently in the Sindh budget. He also regretted that not a single scheme had been kept for Karachi’s District Central.
