KARACHI: Many roads of the metropolis have become difficult to commute on due construction and encroachments but the police claim to have devised a plan to manage the volume of traffic during Ramazan.
“We have expanded our force, while the city roads have been divided into five zones, each having an SSP deployed for monitoring,” said Traffic DIG Tahir Noorani.
He added that they have kept a zero tolerance policy for motorcycle riders who would not be wearing helmets and breaking traffic laws.
A part of the traffic plans includes opening of Lyari Expressway for vehicles to go in the opposite direction between 4 pm and 8 pm, said the DIG. This will let people use the route to go from Mauripur to Sohrab Goth.
At present, progress work is under way on 22 routes, while 48 others are occupied by encroachments and 110 are the ones clogged by vehicles.
However, the traffic officials said they have collaborated with the Sindh government to keep the traffic of four million vehicles flowing in the city.
According to Traffic DIG Asif Ijaz Sheikh, it would be a challenge to keep the vehicles moving given that work is either under way or incomplete on main routes of the city.
