KARACHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday suspended Sindh High Court judgment on the entry of heavy traffic in the metropolis, calling it a violation of fundamental rights.
The SC bench, headed by Justice Saqib Nisar was hearing the identical petitions moved by Sindh government, Karachi Port Trust and Transporters fraternity.
The SHC, in March, had asked the provincial government to place a ban on the movement of heavy traffic in the city during daytime.
On March 31, the provincial government had barred the entry of heavy vehicles in the city from 6am to 11pm. The ban led to a 10-day strike by goods’ transporters which was called off on May 17.
Issuing a verdict in the heavy traffic case on Tuesday (May 23), the high court allowed the plying of heavy traffic on three routes to be specified in the city and directed the relevant authorities to specify three routes for the passage of heavy traffic in Karachi.
Chief Justice, Justice Saqib Nisar remarked that the high court’s decision banning the movement of heavy traffic was a violation of fundamental rights.
He further remarked that the SHC court order was also against the apex court verdict issued on August 17, 2007.
