On Friday night, Pakistani-American student Mehreen Ahmad was found unconscious, lying in a pool of her own blood in the stairway of an apartment building in Perth, Yahoo7 News reported.
Mehreen had reportedly moved to Australia some two years ago and was studying primary school teaching. She was allegedly bashed in the head by a guy who she had been introduced to the same night, Eduardo Santos Abrahao Filho. Returning to her apartment after being out with her friends, Mehreen’s friends stated that she did not return after leaving to get cigarettes. Investigations are underway while details of the incident still remain unclear.
Mehreen was taken to Royal Perth Hospital where she remains in critical state.
According to Perth Now, the suspect was caught by the police a day later, and is on remand until June 7 after appearing in Perth Magistrates Court on charges of “grievous bodily harm”.
Also present at the court hearing was Mehreen’s close friend, Filho’s brother and a few other friends.
Meanwhile, Mehreen’s parents’ have flown in from Dubai to take care of her. A statement released by them on Tuesday expressed gratitude for the hospital staff who took care of her.
