KARACHI: Construction of Lyari Expressway in Karachi would be completed by August this year.

The 39 km long project having sound-bound and northbound carriageways on both banks of the Lyari River would cost Rs11.52 billion, said a National Highway Authority (NHA) press release on Thursday.

The project has four interchanges, 16 overhead bridges and two big bridges over nullahs.

Work on the project had started in 2002 and its 16.15-kilometre southbound section as opened for traffic in February 2008 while 6.5 km portion of the northbound section was opened for traffic in July 2009.

The remaining part of the south-bound section could not be completed due to non-availability of the right of way (ROW).

However, last year, the ROW issue was settled and work on the remaining portion started which is near completion now.

Lyari Expressway would play an important role in overcoming the issue of traffic congestion in the city.
