JIT calls upon Hussain Nawaz

ISLAMABAD: In connection with the Panama Papers case, the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) has summoned Hussain Nawaz Sharif, son of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

According to media reports, the18th meeting of the six-member JIT was held Thursday (today) at Federal Judicial Academy Islamabad. During the meeting, the panel decided to summon Hussain Nawaz to inquire about Sharif Family’s assets in London and Qatar.

However, the date of Hussain Nawaz’s appearance was not made public owing to security reasons.

In order to interrogate Nawaz Sharif, sources said, the JIT has prepared a list of questions, mostly regarding tax returns of London flats.

The panel is also likely to call PM’s other son, Hassan Nawaz Sharif, and daughter Maryam Nawaz.

Earlier, Hussain Nawaz had filed an application in the Supreme Court expressing his reservations over two JIT members – Amer Aziz and Bilal Rasool, who respectively represent the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP).

The SC admitted his application of hearing and will take it up the matter on May 29, after which the JIT will interrogate Hussain Nawaz.

The committee’s other members include Irfan Naeem Mangi (NAB), Brigadier Muhammad Nauman Saeed (ISI), Brigadier Kamran Khurshid (MI) and Wajid Zia (FIA).

According to the apex court, Wajid Zia, Additional Director General (Immigration) of FIA, will head the JIT, which has been directed to commence and complete the investigation and submit its final report on May 22.

The JIT shall have the power to engage and associate local and foreign experts to facilitate the investigation and collection of evidence.

As the JIT, in essence, and substance, is acting as per the directives of Supreme Court of Pakistan, all the Executive Authorities throughout Pakistan shall act in aid of the JIT.
