Thar’s dying peacocks: Wildlife dept takes preventive measures

KARACHI: Teams have been formed for the distribution of sufficient antibiotics and vaccines to the wildlife camps of villages of Tharparkar where peacocks were found to be affected with a disease locally known as Ranikhet.

These views were expressed by The Forest and Wildlife Department secretary while talking to media.

He also appealed to the media and the people to help the department in combating this issue by reporting any ailing peacocks to the wildlife reporting centre or to the Tharparkar’s Control Room deputy commissioner, where it will be taken by the wildlife staff and put in the quarantine till recovery. He further informed that those bringing ailing peacocks to the reporting centre will be compensated

The secretary further informed that with the approach of the summer season, the mortality rate in peacocks had gone up due to heat and low resistance. The mortality in the peacocks is not only because of Ranikhet disease but also because of heat and poultry virus.

He informed the media that the wildlife department had constituted three teams comprising wildlife officials and veterinarian from poultry unit of the department. All the teams are bound to visit the villages in their respective jurisdiction on a daily basis for creating awareness and distribution of multivitamins, and antibiotics to the villagers for the treatment of peacocks, the wildlife department secretary concluded.
