Police not interested in arresting Zaid Talpur, says CJP

ISLAMABAD: The police do not appear keen on arresting the person who misbehaved with the police in Kunri, Umerkot earlier this month, Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar is reported to have said on Monday (today).

During the hearing of a suo motu case taken by the Supreme Court of Pakistan over the issue, the chief justice expressed dissatisfaction over police performance. He reprimanded Mirpurkhas Deputy Inspector General Javed Odho, inquiring why the main accused had not been arrested yet. Another judge on the bench, Justice Umar Ata Bandiyal, questioned the police about their action regarding the incident that took place on May 2.

The judge told the DIG that he was responsible for maintaining the reputation of his force. The DIG informed the court that Zaid Talpur and Asif Pathan had received protective bails. However, he added, two of the people present with Zaid at the police station had been arrested.

Odho said they found out about the arrests through a newspaper article.

The incident surfaced after a video exhibiting inebriated Zaid sitting on the station house officer’s seat in a police station. Zaid was seen surrounded by his aides insulting the SHO and demanding the police officer sit on the ground while addressing him.

After the video surfaced, Kunri DSP Sher Khan and SHO Tassawur Jatt were suspended. According to Umerkot SSP Usman Bajwa, the two police officers showed weakness and concealed facts.

On Tuesday, the police registered a case against six individuals including Zaid, Hassan Talpur, Jamil Marwarri, Lachman Meghwarr, Kareem and Shafi.

The police came into action after Sindh IGP AD Khawaja took notice of the incident and ordered the culprits be arrested soon.
