PEMRA fines TVOne for airing ‘objectionable’ content

LAHORE: The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has imposed a fine of Rs 1 million on TVOne for airing indecent content in their morning show titled ‘Aap ka Sahir’ for airing on March 14, 2017.

PEMRA issued a show cause notice to TVOne on March 15, 2017, directing the management of the channel to file a written reply by March 29, 2017, explaining their position and were further directed to appear for a personal hearing on April 13, 2017.

Later, after examining the written reply of the channel, it was found that the channel had violated Section 20 (c) and (f) of the PEMRA Ordinance as amended by PEMRA Act 2007, Rule 15 (1) of PEMRA Rules 2009 and clauses 3(1) (e), 5 and 17 of Electronic Media (Programmes and Advertisements) Code of Conduct, 2015. On account of airing violation of Electronic Media Code of Conduct, 2015 the channel is not only fined but its management is also warned to be vigilant while conceptualising and airing their morning show. The channel is further directed to appoint an in-house committee to monitor the content before it goes on air and to provide its details to PEMRA within fourteen days.

In the case of non-compliance of the decision, the authority shall proceed for revocation of its license under Section 30 of PEMRA Ordinance 2002 as amended by PEMRA (Amendment) Act 2007.
