Pakistan summons Indian diplomat on LoC violations

  • One killed, three others injured in Indian shelling in AJK

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday summoned India’s Deputy High Commissioner JP Singh to protest ceasefire violation by the Indian forces on the Line of Control in Tandar, Subzkot, Khuiratta, Baroh, Bagsar, Khanjar areas of Azad Jammu Kashmir.

As a result of the firing, one civilian, identified as 18-year-old Muhammad Rizwan of Subzkot village, killed while Willayat Bibi of Subzkot and Abdul Aziz of Tain village were injured. “The deliberate targeting of civilians is indeed condemnable, and contrary to human dignity and human rights, and humanitarian laws,” according to a Foreign Office statement.

South Asia and SAARC Affairs Director General Dr Mohammad Faisal also urged the Indian side to respect the 2003 ceasefire understanding; investigate the incidents; instruct the Indian forces to respect the ceasefire in letter and spirit and maintain peace on the Line of Control.

In a tweet, Foreign Office spokesperson Nafees Zakaria also condemned Indian acts of deliberate targeting of civilians as shelling in various sectors along the Line of Control left one dead and three others injured. He said that India had violated the ceasefire agreement along the LoC.

Kotli Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Zulqarnain Sarfraz confirmed that a mortar shell pierced through concrete roof of one house in the Sabzkot, a village in the Kotli district, at about 2am, killing one and injuring two others while they were asleep.

The injured were rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital in the neighbouring Mirpur district. The police official said that there had been intense shelling through the night, but the intensity had receded in the morning.

On the other hand, Indian-held Kashmir Police Director General SP Vaid also claimed that a woman on this side of the disputed state was also killed and her husband wounded in the Naushera sector. Indian Army spokesperson Manish Mehta also termed the early morning firing indiscriminate, but said the forces were retaliating strongly and effectively.
