KARACHI: Sindh Governor Muhammad Zubair on Thursday handed laptops to 40 outstanding students of Karachi University, under the Prime Minister’s Laptop Scheme Phase II.

Addressing a simple and impressive ceremony arranged to mark the occasion at KU, he said the PM scheme is helping in the promotion of education.

“Laptops have emerged as an essential requirement for research-based, modern day, high education,” said the governor mentioning that merit has been adopted as the sole criteria.

“It is also to ensure that students enrolled in Bachelor’s, Master’s, MPhil, PhD and DAE programmes gain easy access to information technology,” he added.

The Sindh governor, KU chancellor and former student, on the occasion acknowledged that financial assistance for the university needed to be urgently streamlined.

“This is definitely a prerequisite for improved performance of any centre of higher education,” he said reiterating that both federal and provincial governments must join hands in the endeavour.

Muhammad Zubair said that he as a former student of KU will help in addressing its needs in terms of security and above all availability of every relevant facility with specific reference to the quality of education and research.

“I firmly believe that close coordination between federal and provincial higher education commissions can support the cause,” he said.

The Sindh governor said sports and other extra-curricular activities were also equally important for the enhanced intellectual capacities of the students.

Karachi University Vice Chancellor Muhammad Ajmal Khan, while expressing his pleasure to have a KU alum as its chancellor and governor of the province, referred to series of problems faced by its administration, teachers and the students.

“There is an urgent need to restore the Karachi University infrastructure,” said Dr Muhammad Ajmal Khan.

He said 2000 KU students are expected to receive the gadget under phase three of the PM’s Laptop scheme.
