Recently, the Pakistani community arranged a seminar at the Pakistani American Community Centre (PACC) in Fremont Silicon Valley USA to discuss the marvel that is the the Walled City of Lahore. The guest speaker was Kamran Lashari, who was invited to USA by the PACC to give a lecture on the history and significance of the Walled City of Lahore and the authorities’ role to preserve it. The event was attended by almost 300 people including immigrants from Pakistan. The Mayor of Freemont also attended the event.
The Director General Walled City of Lahore Authority gave a talk at the event. The talk was on the initiatives taken by the Lahore Walled City Authority regarding the rehabilitation of the Walled city. The presentation at the talk explained how the Route of Royal Trail or Shahi Guzargah has been restored; what issues confront the residents of narrow streets; and how the mobilisation of the community was being carried out.
Mr Lashari continued with his talk and explained how the Shahi Hammam (17th Century Royal Bath) was renovated by Aga Khan Trust for Culture and how it won the UNESCO Award of Merit. He further spoke about the preservation work being carried at the Lahore Fort. He also showed the attendees of the seminar, the pictures of newly conserved Wazir Khan Square and enlightened them with the plans for renovating the Mariam Zamani mosque as well.
