Sindh governor appreciates Red Crescent’s humanitarian work

KARACHI: Sindh Governor Mohammad Zubair on Monday said that in a case of any natural disaster or an untoward incident, people always need a rapid rescue service, and Red Crescent had delivered on this account as it had vast experience in this regard.

He expressed these views during a meeting with a Red Crescent’s delegation led by its Chairman Professor Dr Saeed Elahi at the Governor House.

(Sindh) Red Crescent’s Chairperson Farzana Naek, General Secretary Brig (r) GM Awan, Provincial Secretary Kanwal Waseem and Principal Secretary to Governor Mohammad Sulaeh Faruqi also attended the meeting.

Zubair, while appreciating humanitarian work of the organisation, said that during recent years, it had taken a new dimension. The expansion of its services in rural and urban areas in the field of disaster management and health are very commendable, he added.

Training is necessary for the staff and drivers of rescue services so as to enable them to be better equipped at the time of any natural disasters and help the masses accordingly, said the governor.

The governor said that the immediate relief services rendered by the charity especially in 2010 and 2011 during floods were of immense importance which will be remembered for decades. He lauded the efforts of the Red Crescent in providing first aid and said that by providing quick relief aid to the affected people the organisation is saving lives.

Dr Saeed Elahi briefed the governor about the performance of the organisation, especially in Sindh region.

He also said that in national ambulance college Islamabad drivers, staff and other relief workers are being taught special courses to combat any disaster, with effectiveness.

Farzana Naek informed the governor that their offices are in 16 districts of the province, while 11 disaster management cells are engaged in assisting the people. An Emergency Operation Centre has been established which will coordinate with all stakeholders, she added.

She further said that In Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur and other districts five large hospitals are operational where staff and other facilities are being provided to the patients.

Red Crescent gifts 350 umbrellas to traffic police: Red Crescent’s Chairman Dr Saeed Elahi, Secretary General Ghulam Muhammad and other office-bearers called on IGP Sindh AD Khawaja at the Central Police Office in Karachi on Monday.

During the meeting, Dr Elahi said that the organisation would take effective steps for training police and traffic personnel so as to save them from heat. Khawaja thanked the delegation for the offer and directed the Sindh DIG Headquarters to ensure training to police and remain in touch with the organisation.

On the occasion, the delegation gifted 350 umbrellas to traffic police. The IGP ordered the DIG Traffic to ensure installation of the umbrellas at traffic points across the city.
