Local body council elections in Punjab’s Nankana Sahib district were postponed during the polling day due to a stay order from the Lahore High Court on account of an incomplete council, on December 22, 2016. It has been more than four months but the local body council is yet to be constituted. The reason for the postponement of council elections was that the three minority seats had to be filled to complete the council.

Elections were held on these three minority seats on Tuesday, in which Bashir Masih Bhatti (independent) secured 16 votes and Dr A D Khan (PTI) secured 14 votes. There was a tie on the third seat between independent candidates, David Masih and Bashir Masih, as both of them received 9 votes. The winner of the third seat would be decided by a toss of coin.

It was disappointing for the ruling PML (N) which failed to file a candidate in this election. Sources told that earlier, in the representative elections, PML (N) secured only 14 seats from a total of 65 seats against 40 independent winners, majority backed by an independent district chairman candidate Tahir Manzoor Gill.
