A handwritten copy of the US Declaration of Independence was found in the West Sussex Record Office in Chichester.
“You have the names of everyone who signed the original. You can pick out Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, James Wilson. You have the array of names of the Founding Fathers of the United States,” said West Sussex County Archivist Wendy Walker.
It’s thought to date back to the 1780s and was most likely written in New York or Philadelphia.
It’s still not clear how the “Sussex Declaration” ended up in the UK but it will now be taken to the British Library for further testing.
