The US-Pakistan Centre for Advanced Studies in Water (USPCAS-W) of Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET) Jamshoro observed Earth Day on Friday.
Besides tree plantation at the new building of USPCAS-W, the management organised the badminton tournament at the university gymnasium, which was inaugurated by the Director Sports MUET Engineer Saleem Ahmed Memon.
Addressing the participants, Saleem Memon said the university encouraged such type of sports activities to keep the students, faculty, and staff healthy and innovative. Apart from the academic and research, he said USPCAS-W is also active in organising sports activities.
USPCAS-W Deputy Director Prof Dr Rasool Bux Mahar said the earth day is used to be celebrated on April 22 on every year, but the centre had planned to celebrate it extensively by including tree plantation and sports activities.
Due to environment degradation in the society, each day should be celebrated as earth day by contributing to the environment, Dr Mahar said, and added that these types of extra-curricular activities freshen up the mind of the participants to think innovative and work enthusiastically for the research oriented activities.
A total of 32 teams in four pools participated in the badminton tournament and the final was clinched by M Shahid Panhwar and Muhammad Wajid Ijaz defeating Imdad Ali Nizamani and Iram Sifat.
Earlier, the students, faculty, and staff of USPCAS-W participated in the tree plantation campaign in the new building where different environment-friendly trees were planted by them.
