The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has asked India to revoke a one-month ban on social media services in Occupied Kashmir, with an immediate effect.
Internet service providers have been directed to block users’ access to 22 platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and YouTube.
Steven Butler, Asia Programme coordinator at CPJ, said the sweeping censorship of social media under the pretext of maintaining peace and order will bring neither peace nor order.
He said such broad censorship clearly violates the democratic ideals and human rights.
These extreme measures have been taken by the Indian security forces in an attempt to crush a mass uprising against New Delhi’s rule in the Indian occupied Kashmir.
