Atleast 41 people including shooter Imran have been arrested so far in Mashal Khan murder case, DIG Mardan Alam Khan Shanwari claimed on Thursday.

Addressing a press conference in Mardan,  Shinwari revealed that the shooter who has been identified as Imran was caught on information based on confessions of other accused in the case.

“Some things we will share with media later,” said DIG Mardan.

Shinwari said that all the investigation has been evidence-based and use of technology has been utilised to catch the culprit.

Earlier on April 23, an employee of the AWKUM, wanted for inciting the mob to murder Mashal Khan over unfounded blasphemy allegations was arrested.

Mashal Khan, who was a student of journalism at AWKUM, was lynched by an enraged mob on the university premises on April 13. The mob killed the student over charges of blasphemy.

Earlier,  Additional Advocate General (AAG) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Waqar Ahmed told the Supreme Court (SC) that the shooter in the Mashal murder case has been identified but remains at large.

A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar was informed by the AAG KP that the person who shot at Mashal thrice has yet to be arrested. Police found three bullet casings from the scene of the crime, he added.

The lawyer submitted a report detailing that a total of 36 accused, including nine university staffers, had been arrested in connection with the case, six of whom have confessed to involvement in Mashal’s murder before a magistrate under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The main accused in the case, Bilal Baksh, a security in-charge at Abdul Wali Khan University (AWKU), had been taken into custody earlier this week.
