Kashmir central to regional peace: Asif

Federal Minister for Defence Khawaja Asif held a meeting with his Russian counterpart, Defence Minister Sergey Shoygu. Minister Khawaja Asif expressed hope that his visit would further strengthen defence relations between the two countries.

Federal Minister Asif stated that Russia is an important country and Pakistan regards its growing power as a positive development for strategic stability in a multi-polar world. He further said that Pakistan acknowledges Russia’s role in global as well as regional affairs.

He mentioned that an agreement on military technical cooperation would further enhance the relations between the two countries. Federal Minister stated that there is a need to encourage and enhance Russian Navy participation in joint exercises with the Pakistan Navy.

Earlier on, Defence Minister Asif said that region’s peace and stability will remain at stake if the Kashmir issue is left unresolved.

Speaking at the sixth Moscow Conference on International Security, Khawaja Asif said that if not settled peacefully, the Kashmir issue will not only threaten Pakistan but also the security of the entire region.

“The Kashmir issue must be resolved in accordance with the UN resolution,” Asif said.

He further expressed, “I must share that all peace overtures and sincere efforts made by Pakistan are not being reciprocated”.

He said to the world community that it is their responsibility to address the long-standing conflicts of the world, including the Kashmir issue.

“From Palestine to Kashmir, we have a history of suppression and denial of basic human rights,” minister said.

Defence minister said that Pakistan does not favours among the terrorist outfits.
