KARACHI: Both tracks of the Lyari Expressway will be made fully functional by August 14, said Federal Minister for Communication and Parliamentary Affairs Shaikh Aftab Ahmad here on Tuesday.

The project would definitely be opened for regular traffic on the eve of Independence Day, he told the media during inspection of different federal government-funded road infrastructure projects in Karachi.

All the ongoing projects would be completed on time and no compromise would be made in their quality, he added.

The minister said the federal government was making all-out efforts to ensure timely completion of the projects as per international standards.

He was of the opinion that the city mayor must be involved in the affairs related to Karachi.

He was accompanied by chairman of the standing committee of national assembly on communication Mohammad Muzzamil Qureishi, MNA Maulana Qamaruddin and Karachi Mayor Wasim Akhter.

Mr Qureishi said all hitches and hindrance in the completion of the federal government-funded projects in the metropolis had been removed. “Green Line Bus Service is particularly a much-warranted gift by the prime minister for the citizens of Karachi,” he said.

The chairman of the standing committee of national assembly on communication also appreciated that the city mayor was keen to play his due role in early completion of the project. He added that the standing committee had unanimously recommended for the inclusion of Karachi mayor in the administrative board of Green Line Bus Project.

The city mayor thanked the federal government for inviting him to join the inspection of the ongoing projects in Karachi.

This, he said, reflected the respect federal government held for the citizens and their elected mayor.

He said the projects of Lyari Expressway, Green Line Bus and M-9 Superhighway would not only solve traffic problems of Karachi but would also benefit the people across the country.

He expressed the hope that the federal government would also announce a special package to meet civic needs of Karachi.
