Tall claims yet no result – what happened to the MDGs?

It is disheartening to know that despite spending trillions of rupees by the incumbent government and its predecessor, Pakistan has failed to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in health, education, social welfare and other sectors. The documents and statistics of the Ministry of Planning, Development and Reforms and the Ministry of Finance revealed that Pakistan’s progress in 24 indicators was way off track and it had only achieved four targets. All this calls into question tall claims by the government who always boasts of progress and development in the country. There is no denying the fact that government is leaving no stone unturned to improve health care system and provide equal access to quality education on basis of merit but as compared to other countries, Pakistan’s performance on MDGs remained less satisfactory. It is hoped that the government would revise its priorities to achieve the ambitious targets as mere words will not do anything until backed by actions.
