Rain makes the weather pleasant in Punjab, wheat farmers worry

Intermittent rain lashed the provincial capital and other parts of Punjab on Sunday and turned the weather pleasant, alarming the wheat farmers. At least 10 people reportedly lost their lives in rain-related incidents in different parts of the country.

The new spell of westerly rain system that entered Punjab on Friday has broken the week long spell of heat waves.

Thunderstorms and light rain were reported in several districts of Punjab on Sunday. Rain also poured in Jhelum, Sargodha, Chakwal, Gujrat, Kasur, Attock, Mianwali and other parts of the province.

Lahore experienced light showers in the morning which continued till the filing of this report.

Rain hit areas from Lahore to Chakwal and the wheat farmers in these areas seemed worried as this is the time for the harvest of wheat crops.

A farmer Sanaullah from Sargodha told Pakistan Today that he had just harvested three acres of wheat while rest of the 10 acres couldn’t be harvested because of unavailability of bardana (gunny bags). He said that despite submitting numerous applications, he was still waiting for the gunny bags.

Nine people including women and children lost their lives in different parts of the province; four in Kamoke, two in Nowshera, two in Jhang and one in Lahore lost their lives due to rain-related incidents.

According to the meteorological office, the westerly rain system will continue till tonight.
