Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Friday announced his intention to hold a rally in the federal capital next Friday to demand resignation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

“Resign while you are being investigated. This is not an unusual demand,” he said while speaking to reporters outside the National Assembly. “How will the PML-N confront the public after the comments made in the Supreme Court judgement,” he questioned.

“I asked the PML-N supporters, what were you distributing sweets for yesterday? You should have read the full judgement,” he said. “It has never happened in Pakistan’s history before that such comments were passed against a sitting prime minister,” he said.

“All five judges have raised questions asked by the PTI,” he claimed, adding that the Supreme Court had rejected all defences presented by the prime minister’s counsel. Imran also questioned if it was possible for heads of institutions like the National Accountability Bureau to investigate the prime minister while he remained in power.

He also said that the joint investigation team (JIT) cannot work independently under Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. In a democracy, the prime minister rules on the strength of moral authority and Nawaz Sharif has lost it, he said. “If such comments from the judges had been passed in a democracy against the chief executive, he would have resigned himself,” he said.

The PTI chief compared the current scenario with the United Kingdom where David Cameron quit after he lost the referendum despite being elected with a majority because he lost the moral ground to lead. He also said that they have reservations over JIT and they would approach the apex court in this regard after the meeting.
