Minister lauds role of World Food Programme

KARACHI: A delegation of World Food Programme (WFP) led by Country Director Finbarr Curran and Provincial Head Aline Rumonge called on Sindh Planning and Development Minister Hazar Bijarani at his office.

The delegation briefed about the WFP ongoing projects related to nutrition, malnutrition, and stunting.

These projects are running successfully in eight districts, including Tharparkar, Umerkot, Sanghar, Jamshoro, Thata, Sujjawal, Mirpur Khas, and Badin, the delegation informed the minister.

Bijarani lauded the efforts of the organisation and expressed satisfaction over the performance of above-said projects to curtail the poverty and hunger in downtrodden areas of Sindh.

A large number of lives are lost before reaching hospitals due to poor transportation and infrastructure, the minister said and requested the WFP to provide the government with an air ambulance.

Besides, he proposed the delegation to initiate projects for health nutrition, and poverty reduction in rest of the districts of Kashmor, Kandhkot, Qambar, Shahdadkot.

He further added that world donors should come forward to start projects for pure drinking water in dry and barren areas of Kacho Tharparkar Umerkot and areas of Sindh adjoining Balochistan border for which the government will provide its full support/assistance and coordination.

The Sindh government has been taking measures to ensure health facilities, reduction in poverty, hunger and improve the quality of life in the province, he said. “To materialise this we are ready to extend all possible support to any world organisation.”
