The Punjab government has decided to set up two new medical universities in Rawalpindi and Multan.

According to sources, a decision has been made in this regard in principle.

Punjab only has two medical universities despite having a population of 120 million. An inter-university board would also be set up to ensure quality education, the sources said.

Rawalpindi Medical College and Nishtar Medical College would respectively become constituent colleges of the proposed universities, they said, adding that the government maintained that the decentralisation of powers was the need of the hour.

After establishing the new universities, the province will be better equipped to educate those seeking medical training, the sources added.
