ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nasir has taken Suo-moto notice of Mardan student lynching over charges of blasphemy.
The country’s top judge, taking notice of the lynching of Abdul Wali Khan University student Mashal Khan, has sought a report from Inspector General Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) in the next 36 hours.
On April 13, Abdul Wali Khan University, Mardan student Mashal Khan, 23, was shot and beaten to death by a violent mob on university premises.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had also condemned the incident in strong words and said that the responsible persons will not be spared at any cost.
“I am grieved at the death of Mashal Khan. The state must take action against those who take the law into their own hands,” PM said in a statement.
Chief Minister KPK Pervez Khattak signed a summary for the formation of a judicial commission to probe the incident.
A resident of the United Nations for the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Neil Buhne also condemned the incident and demanded the Pakistani authorities to bring the killers to justice.
It should be noted that Mashal Khan, a journalism student, was stripped, beaten, shot, and thrown from the second floor of his hostel at the Abdul Wali Khan University in Mardan a couple of days ago, sources at the university said.
Graphic video footage from the scene shows dozens of men outside the hostel kicking and hurling projectiles at a body sprawled on the ground.
An Anti-Terrorism Court sent eight suspects who were allegedly involved in the murder into police custody for four days.
