The Sustainable Land Management Programme (SLMP) of the Punjab Government is making good progress in the fight against land degradation in the province. The SLMP is a key initiative of the government driven through partnerships with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) such as the UNDP.

Punjab Planning and Development (P&D) Board Member Khalid Sultan stated this while addressing the inaugural workshop on the SLMP jointly organised with the National Rural Support Programme (NRSP) at the P&D Complex here on Friday.

Addressing the workshop, Sultan said that given the threat of continuing land degradation and its implication for the country’s economy and society, it was important and vital that development partners continue to support the SLMP programme and drive it to its completion by ensuring full commitment and availability of resources.

The workshop which has been engaged in establishing community-based organisations in four districts: Bhakkar, Layyah, Khushab and Chakwal. Sultan also said that the purpose of the workshop was to bring relevant stakeholders together and prepare for on-ground activities.

Over 25 participants representing the NRSP, agriculture, department, P&D, and climate change departments also attended the workshop.
