Members of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Friday strongly condemned the Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan incident wherein a student was lynched to death over alleged blasphemy and called for the constitution of a judicial commission to conduct an independent inquiry.
The provincial assembly resumed its proceedings after a two-day interval with Deputy Speaker Dr Meher Taj Roghani in the chair. Speaking on appoint of order, Sardar Hussain Babak of ANP said the incident would give negative message to the world. He termed it a gruesome example of the extremism and called for the prevention of such incidents, otherwise, the situation would go worsen. The people, he said, were having big expectations from the universities.
Sardar Babak said that blasphemy was unpardonable act. But, the punishing of such persons was the responsibility of the courts and the governments.
Nighat Yasmin Orakzai of PPP also termed the incident as shameful saying there was no evidence of the blasphemy against the deceased and demanded the suspension of the Vice-Chancellor, concerned police officials and constitution of judicial commission.
Sardar Aurangzeb Nalotha, the parliamentary leader of PML-N demanded the removal of the Advisor to the Chief Minister for Higher Education.
In response to the speeches of the opposition legislators, Chief Minister Pervez Khattak himself took the floor and condemned the incident and termed it tragic incident. He said that taking law into hands was not good in his opinion and said that Mardan deputy inspector general will submit an inquiry of the incident, which would be followed by the constitution of a judicial commission.
