The US Department of State has warned citizens against all non-essential travel to Pakistan. This travel warning replaces the travel warning issued on October 7, 2016.
Furthermore, the consular services provided by the American Embassy in Islamabad, the Consulate General in Karachi, and the Consulate General in Lahore are often limited due to the security environment.
At this time, the Consulate General in Peshawar is not providing consular services.
The government of Pakistan maintains heightened security measures, particularly in major cities, following attacks or in response to threats, said the state department advisory.
Pakistan continues to experience significant terrorist violence, including sectarian attacks. The targetted areas include crowded facilities like hospital, schools, airports, rallies, hotels, places of worship and military installations, the advisory added.
Foreign and indigenous terrorist groups continue to pose a danger to US citizens in Pakistan, it further added.
Thus, the local government has restricted foreigners to travel in certain areas that include the FATA area, Swat Valley, K-P and the area along the LoC.
However, if one does decide to travel, the State Department has issued a travel advisory on Pakistan, which directs travellers to change the travel routes and timing. Minimise the duration of trips to public markets, restaurants, and other locations.
The State Department also advised travellers to avoid hotels that do not have stringent security measures. Furthermore, a photo of your passport, entry stamp and Pakistani visa should be available with the traveller at all times.
