Sustainable Development Goals top national priority: MPA

Besides the importance of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the global level, the realisation of these milestones is equally important for the development and progress of Pakistan. Therefore, it is a national obligation for all stakeholders to work together for improved implementation of the SDGs in a sustained and coherent manner.

MPA and Convener of the Punjab Special Task Force on SDGs Azma Zahid Bukhari said this while chairing a consultative meeting on SDGs jointly held by the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) and Punjab Special Task Force on SDGs.

Speaking on the occasion, Azma Zahid Bukhari said that since the implementation of SDGs was crucial for the development of Pakistan, there is a need to work together for the shared objectives regardless of our political affiliations.

Highlighting various aspects of the SDGs, Abid Qaiyum Suleri said that with 17 goals and 169 targets, the overall agenda of the SDGs may seem over ambitious, but that the goald align with national priorities. He said that updating our legislators on the implementation of SDGs and keeping them well informed should be a continuous process.

Participants of the meeting earlier discussed various aspects of the SDGs to identify challenges and opportunities for implementing the global initiative that aims to improve living standards without compromising the rights of future generations.

The consultative meeting was participated by MPAs Mehwish Sultana, Dr Nosheena Hamid, Amir Hayat Haraj, Sadia Nadeem, Adnan Farid, and Waqas Hassan, as well as SDPI Executive Director Abid Qaiyum Suleri, and representatives from international development agencies including UNICEF and UNDP.
