World Bank delegation extends helping hand to eliminate child labour

The World Bank Mission headed by Pablo Gottret called on Minister for Labour and Human Resource Raja Ashfaq Sarwar here on Monday.

The members of the World Bank delegation appreciated the work being carried out by the labour department and lauded departmental efforts for the elimination of child labour. The World Bank Mission expressed their desire to work in close collaboration with the Punjab government in general and the labour department particular.

The provincial minister informed the delegation that the department was working on a migrant policy and up till now 13,231 potential migrants had been sent abroad after their skills orientation so that they can work with dignity. The department has also launched a media campaign in this regard and is working with non-governmental organisations in southern Punjab.

Furthermore, the World Bank Mission presented their proposals to the provincial minister who informed the missions that the Punjab government was already conducting skilled labour training among thousands of young adults through the PVTC, TEVTA, and PSPA. The minister said that the government was ready to work with interested foreign organisations as they share the same goals of the betterment of children’s quality of life.

Labour Minister Raja Ashfaq Sarwar further directed officials to refine the tabled proposals along with the TEVTA and the PVTC so that concrete efforts could begin throughout out not only Punjab but the whole country.

The meeting was also attended by the labour secretary, the senior social protection specialist, and senior economist Yoongoung Cho.
