KARACHI: The Sindh High Court on Monday reinstated Allah Dino Khawaja as the Sindh Police chief.

Issuing contempt of court notices to Abdul Majeed Dasti who assumed charge of acting IG, the high court summoned a detailed response from the provincial government and others by April 6.

The court annulled the notification regarding the dismissal of AD Khawaja from his office.

A notification issued by the Chief Secretary Sindh, Rizwan Memon read:

“The Government of Sindh has been pleased to declare 4th April 2017 (Tuesday) as Public Holiday throughout the Province of Sindh, on the occasion of 38th death anniversary of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, Ex-Prime Minister of Islamic Republic of Pakistan, for all offices, Autonomous, Semi-Autonomous Bodies, Corporations and Local Councils under the Administrative Control of Government of Sindh except essential services.”

The Sindh government used its maximum unilateral authority to give the additional charge of IGP to Sardar Abdul Majeed Dasti, who was already serving the province in the capacity of Additional IG till “appointment/posting of regular incumbent by the Establishment Division.” A Sindh police spokesman announced later in the day that Dasti had taken charge.

As per the law, officers in grade 21 and above can only be appointed with the consent of the prime minister after a province forwards the request to the federal government. Any appointment for the post of IG police is made for a minimum period of three years.
