ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has decided to form a cyber security directorate for the surveillance of blasphemous content.
IT, legal experts Director General (DG) Technical, DG Regulation and 10 other officials will be included in the cyber security directorate. Major duties of the directorate will include keeping a check on the content published on various social media websites.
It will also have the authority to conduct a legal action against any immoral and objectionable material. Earlier, the Interior Minister told media that Facebook has assured Pakistan that any blasphemy concerns will be addressed by the social media giant.
Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif earlier this month directed PTA to remove all blasphemous content on social media. Blasphemy is a criminal offence in the country and can carry the death penalty.
Rather than chasing every tenuous suspicion of blasphemy and perhaps an 'immoral' tweet from a citizen, why not start with something that is far more damaging religiously and from a societal perspective: PORNOGRAPHY.
Many countries, rich or poor block porn by default, and so should Pakistan's PTA. Even in liberal Europe and UK, ISPs are obliged to block porn by default to protect children, while Pakistan lags behind on this damaging aspect of the WWW.
I agree.
