Today’s White Lies

Pakistan Day was celebrated with much fanfare this year round. Not only were there well-attended functions at our different embassies, but some were a bit of a spectacle as well, like the projection of the national flag on the Burj al Arab in the UAE.

This development is being attributed to the fact that career diplomats are holding key positions at the moment. In particular, their wives are said to be good at the whole putting-together of events thing, if given a chance.

Yes, but what about Maliha Lodhi, our ambassador to the UN? She might not be a career diplomat but she is a lady nonetheless. And our resourceful ladies, as mentioned earlier, can give the gentlemen a run for their money when it comes to such things. Or, come to think of it, when it comes to anything. Looking forward to a woman running the foreign office now. Perhaps to undo the damage that menfolk have done over the years.

A smear campaign has started in certain sections of the press against columnists and journalists who were appreciative of the prime minister’s recent liberal and secular views. When the premier hit all the right notes at Holi this year, a bit of a maelstrom hit the Nazaria-e-Pakistan types, who would have none of Nawaz Sharif’s recently acquired liberal disposition.

Well, more power to the PM, we say!
