KARACHI: Sindh Social Welfare Minister Shamim Mumtaz said that people with disabilities could be a valuable workforce for the society if enough resources were provided to them.
She expressed these views, on Wednesday, while presiding over a meeting to explore cooperation under Public-Private Partnership at her office.
Social Welfare Secretary Altaf Ahmed Bijarani, Social Welfare Additional Secretary Muhammad Essa Memon, Social Welfare Director General Muhammad Raheem lakho, RCPH Liaqatabad Karachi Deputy Director Aamir Waheed and other officers were also present at the meeting.
She said that recently, on the successful completion of first tenure agreement with Panah – a non-governmental organisation for running Dar-ul-Aman Karachi– the agreement has been extended for another ten-year term with improved services to destitute women who sought shelter.
She said that 15 child protection units were also working with the assistance of local, national and international civil society organisation in the province.
On the occasion, Rehabilitation Centre for Physically Handicapped (RCPH) Liaqatabad Karachi Deputy Director Aamir Waheed said that an agreement has been signed with NowPDP an NGO for imparting skill development vocational training to multiple handicapped including four girls.
Giving details, he informed the meeting that RCPH would provide logistic support, whereas NowPDP has arranged block printing trainer.
He said that after completion of training, exhibitions would also be arranged so that special person could showcase their products and earn a livelihood in a respectable manner.
The Social Welfare minister also directed the Social Welfare secretary to explore the possibilities under PPP mode to improve the quality of education and capacity building of teachers at Mashal Elementary School MirpurKhas, Desert Flower School Umerkot, Roshan KG School Kuneri and others running under the Sindh Social Welfare Department and prepare detail report within a month.
She also directed to chalk out refresher course for the instructors of special person centres.
