Clarifying his position on the letter empowering former ambassador to the US Hussain Haqqani to directly issue visas to Americans without clearance from the authorities concerned, former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said Friday the visas issued to Americans during his tenure was a non-issue and was meant to divert attention from the real issues at hand.
Gilani, while addressing a press conference in Multan, said, “This letter that has been leaked has a set of conditions that can be found in the first part, they include the point that people should be given visas only if they have the State Department’s recommendation and the reason for their visit is very clear.”
Rather than raising the issues of visas, the presence of Osama bin Laden in Pakistan needed to be discussed, Gilani said, adding it was already clear that the US force that sneaked into Pakistan to kill bin Laden did not have any visa at all.”
“Had the findings of the judicial commission created after bin Laden’s killing been made public, the questions being raised today would have been answered a long time ago,” the former premier said, demanding that an investigation into the visas issued to Americans be conducted from 2002 to 2017.
