Experts at a group discussion organised here by the Institution of Engineers Pakistan, Rawalpindi-Islamabad Centre (IEP-RIC) on Monday said lack of commitment and professional competency hinder timely completion of development projects.
The discussion was arranged in collaboration with JICA Alumni Association of Pakistan, says a press release.
The experts called for proper planning and monitoring of development projects to ensure their proper execution. The discussion was part of IEP-RIC’s regular activities to promote professional calibre of the young engineers.
Speaking as a resource person at the talks, Prof Dr Muhammad Tahir Nawaz highlighted project management’s techniques and emphasised that the human values and professional commitment must be upheld while carrying out development work.
He proposed that the young engineers should prefer to build up future profession career as entrepreneurs for their financial wellbeing. He also stressed for proper documentation of the projects at implementation and wrapping up stage.
About the kickbacks and corrupt practices in projects’ handlings, he said these could be controlled through self-accountability and by creating awareness about the disaster affects of non-ethical and inhuman behaviour in the working practices. He also briefed the participants about management’s basic knowledge, skills, tools and techniques, with the help of slides.
The other speakers including IEP-RIC Chairman Hafiz M Ehsanul Haq Qazi, Vice Chairman Dr Attuallah Shah and Engr Liaqat Hayat spoke about the challenges and problems being faced by the engineering community.
Hafiz Ehsanul Haq announced that the IEP-RIC will hold series of functions this year for the professional development of the young engineers. Dr Attaullah Shah, who is also Vice-Chancellor of City University, Peshawar, underlined the need of developing universities’ curriculum keeping in view the ground realities and relevant practices.
JICA President Syed Ahmed Ali Shah, who presided over the event, assured that they will continue to support the IEP-RIC for the capacity-building of the young engineers.
