A video showing a young Latino defending a Muslim couple, who were being harassed in a New York City subway by a much-older Latino, has gone viral on social media in the last week.

The video shows an older woman, originally from Puerto Rico, asking the Muslim couple “why are you here?”, asking them why they came to the country if they weren’t “with us”. Ignoring pleas of a white woman to leave the couple alone, the Latino continued her verbal tirade.

Until 23-year-old Tracey Tong stepped in, DailyMail reported.

Tong, a half-Chinese and half-Latin American, asked the woman about her native country to which she replied, “I am from here! I was born in America! It doesn’t matter where I come from”.

Tong then tries to convince the lady to respect the Muslim couple. ‘I’m asking you to please respect her. In Spanish, in English, in Chinese, in French – whatever language you want me to say it, I will say it.’

“We are all in this together,” Tong said. “Whether you like what’s going on in the government or not, you got to deal with it. You are a grown woman.”

This episode is one in a series of incidents of hate crimes reported after the November 9 US elections.

Earlier in February, a man in Virginia was arrested for biting another man’s face after using anti-Muslim slurs.

Investigators said Robin McGreer approached a 31-year-old man on November 27, 2016, in a parking space, started a conversation and threatened him with racial insults.
