The Sri Lankan-Pakistan Trade Association has sent ten corneas as a gift to the people of Punjab.

The corneas were received by Mayo Hospital’s Dr Asad Aslam at the Lahore airport on Saturday.

Immediately after receiving the corneas, the doctor and his team operated on ten blind persons in Mayo Hospital and transplanted the corneas. Dr Asad Aslam said that the gift was very welcome and had enabled the return of vision to ten people.

He said that Sri Lanka was a major source of cornea donation in the world. Although $300 are usually spent for the transport of the organs, the cost was borne completely by the Sri Lanka-Pakistan Trade Association.

He said that the ophthalmology department of Mayo Hospital had prepared a waiting list so that available corneas could be transplanted according to priority.
