KARACHI: After three days of house listing from March 15 to 17, the population census commenced in Karachi on Saturday in a smooth manner, an official of the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics said.
He stated that the first phase of the 6th Population and Housing Census 2017 would continue till April 15.
In the metropolis, there are 14,522 blocks and one enumerator would be responsible for two blocks each.
The house listing was conducted from March 15 to 17.
The population census would be carried out from March 18 to April 14.
The enumerators are from the departments of Local Government, School Education and Health and Revenue.
There would be one enumerator for every block that would consist of 200 to 250 houses.
The second phase would be carried out from April 25 to May 25.
There were some complaints that house listing was not carried out in some of the areas. These would be covered in the second block from March 31 to April 2, the official of the Federal Bureau of Statistics said.
He said that the six Admin districts of Karachi have been divided into 37 `census districts’.
Meanwhile, the first day of the headcount as part of the census concluded in Hyderabad on Saturday with the teams carrying out the exercise in 1,036 census blocks in the district.
Census Assistant Commissioner and Pakistan Bureau of Statistics Deputy Director Abdul Majeed Laghari informed that 2,630 staff members including the charge and circle supervisors and enumerators were engaged in the count.
Responding to a query, he explained that the people who were out of the country but for not more than a period of 6 months would be counted.
“A family member of any person or persons who are out of the country can tell the enumerator about how many persons from their home are out of the country. This information will be filled in the Census Form 2 with names and details of such persons,” he added.
He further clarified that the said information could be filled in the form without producing national identity cards or their photocopies to the enumerators.
According to Laghari, the head count’s first phase would continue till March 20.
Some 2,700 policemen in addition to the army and rangers personnel were deployed for the security duty.
