Diabetes spreading at alarming rate in Pakistan: Int’l conference

Diabetes is spreading at an alarming proportion in Pakistan and there were currently more than 7 million people suffering from the disease, while 3 million were reportedly undiagnosed.

This data was revealed in the 7th International Diabetes Federation edition published in November 2015 at the 4th International Diabetes Conference held here on Thursday, said a press release.

The conference was organised by Diabetic Association of Pakistan (DAP) to discuss opinions, insights and perspectives by the diabetes experts from globally recognised centres.

The conference was held in three cities: Lahore on March 12, Islamabad on March 14 and Karachi on March 16.

Sir Michael Hirst, a former president of International Diabetes Federation (IDF) said that there is still a lot more to do but this a like climbing a mountain and each step takes us closer to the summit.

As in previous years, he hoped this year’s conference will also help clinicians in Pakistan to manage their diabetes patients more efficiently.

He also urged to follow the IDF slogan “Eats less, walk more”. IDF President-Elect Professor Nam H Cho, Professor Samad Shera and Dr Asim Jamal also spoke to the conference.
