Directs concerned authorities to speed up the work
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has directed the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) and K-IV Bulk Water Supply Project PD to expedite the work so that people of Karachi can get water in 2018.
This he said while presiding over a meeting to review the progress on K-IV and Lyari Expressway here at the New Secretariat, said a statement issued here on Monday.
The meeting was attended by Local Government Minister Jam Khan Shoro, Chief Secretary Rizwan Memon, Principal Secretary to CM Naveed Kamran Baloch, Karachi Commissioner Aijaz Ali Khan, FWO Commander Brig Waseem Baber, K-IV PD Saleem Siddiqui and others.
Briefing the chief Minister, Brigadier Waseem Baber said that the work on K-IV project from Keenjhar Lake to Karachi has been started on a war footing. The FWO has deployed three units and the total manpower employed on the project is 1313.
The machinery including 128 dumpers, 101 tractors, 61 water bowsers, 83 excavators, 42 rollers, 19 dozers and such other equipment are being used for the project.
The length of the project is 121 kilometers, open canal 94.33 km, RCC Siphon 5.26km long. The package – of K-IV includes Rs4.9 billion worth pipes, 4.9 billion earthwork, 1.18 billion culverts, 1.25 billion canal lining and Rs2.72 billion miscellaneous works.
The chief minister was informed that the federal government in its PSDP 2016-17 has allocated Rs1,000 million against which Rs400 million have been released while the Sindh government has allocated Rs6 billion against which Rs3 billion have been released.
Murad urged the FWO to expedite the work so that remaining Rs3 billion could be released.
A request would also be made to the federal government to release the remaining amount and allocate its Rs 9 billion shares in the next financial year.
Saleem Siddiqui said that the acquisition of land was also an issue adding that there is 11,936 acres government land and 1053-28 private land which is crossing some villages.
On this, the chief minister directed the chief secretary to resolve the issue and arrange the land so that project could be completed in 2018.
Briefing on completion of the remaining portion of Lyari Expressway, Waseem Baber said that they have been working day and night to complete the expressway.
He said that there were some areas which are under encroachment such as Saliha para, Central Muslimabad and some area of Manghopir Ramp.
The project was originally launched at a cost of Rs4.89 billion on May 11, 2002, then it was revised at Rs9.94 billion.
Murad was told that out of 32.61km embankment 29km have been completed. Sub base are 32.61 kilometres long, of them, 28.8 km have been done.
A work on the elevated structure -1 right from Sindhi Hotel to Teen Hati has been completed by 85 percent while working on the elevated structure from Manghopir to Mewashah has been done by 65 percent and work on the remaining portion is in progress.
The CM directed Aijaz Ali to expedite the work of removing encroachments.
“We will not allow halting of development works on the pretext of encroachment,” he concluded.
