Lack of democratic norms

RECENTLY, on 9 March, 2017, during a national assembly session over Imran Khan’s “Phateechar” comment, a feud was witnessed between a PML noon and PTI speaker. Logically speaking, when two parties have differences towards a particular matter, it is the sole responsibility of the speakers to ensure neutrality and allow members to express their opinions and criticism, within the bounds of parliamentary norms and decency. However, intolerance and violence prevails in Pakistan and a precedent has been set by the NA speakers. It reflects the fact, that democratic norms are neither implemented not followed by leaders in the true letter and spirit. Therefore, the government is requested to take action against the immature and intolerant behaviour of the officials as the essence of democracy is right of disagreement, tolerance and strict accountability.
