IN Pakistan, Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is not properly regulated which results in hazardous environmental, social and economic effects. According to a report, more than 70 percent of towns and districts are deprived of an adequate municipal solid waste system. The waste is either discarded through incineration or dumped into running streams. Also, the scavengers hunt for the recycle materials found in waste and sell it later. A research suggested, 35% of the municipal solid waste comprises biological waste that can be used for the production of fertilisers. Further, the landfills created for discarding waste can be designed into energy plants. Thus, the government is requested to come up with effective policies for a proper waste system. It should formulate a regulatory body which will review, update and implement the existing laws in respect to municipal waste management in Pakistan.
