An event on women empowerment was hosted by Begum Kalsoom Nawaz Sharif at the Prime Minister’s Office on Wednesday as part of ECO Summit events in honour of the First Lady of Turkey.

The First Lady of Turkey was welcomed by First Lady of Pakistan Begum Kalsoom Nawaz and Minister of State and BISP Chairperson MNA Marvi Memon. The event was attended by the spouse of the Turkish foreign minister, Mrs Hulya Cavusoglu, the spouse of the Turkish minister of economy, Mrs Aysen Zeybekci, spouse of the Turkish minister for development, Mrs Zeliha Elvan, the spouse of the Turkish Minister of transportation, Mrs Habibe Arslan, the spouse of the Turkish chief of general staff Mrs Sule Akar and the spouse of the Turkish ambassador, Mrs Asli Girgin, and Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) beneficiaries.

The Turkish First lady added that Pakistan and Turkey enjoy good relations and would keep on supporting each other in the fight against poverty and to make the world a better place to live.

Speaking on the occasion, MNA Marvi Memon said that the BISP was the largest social safety net in South Asia that not only targets women by disbursing cash grants to strengthen them economically but also ensures much-needed support systems for their social uplift.

The first ladies interacted with BISP beneficiaries who shared their stories of struggle against poverty. They were appreciative of enhanced BISP funds for their livelihoods and the many linkages to other welfare programs.
